2025 Women in trades Course
Aim:
The aim of the Women in Trades course is to introduce Year 10 females to a practical based hands on course where they will experience VET education. This allows these young woman to make INFORMED decisions about their future VM VET course selection in their senior years.
Rational:
Due to the diminishing secondary schooling offerings of Industrial Technology & Design style subjects, trade pathways are often being overlooked by students in senior subject selection. Modern students often select a VM pathway with limited knowledge of this trade area or without having any previous practical based subject experience. This leads to students struggling with competence and engagement, as they have not been set up for success. The Women in Trades course offered at ONTTC seeks to break down some of these barriers and provide a program which encourages young woman to confidently pursue a trade in their senior years. In line with ONTTC’s values, we seek to provide opportunities for all student groups to undertake a trade pathway. This course gives the students an exploratory learning experience in a small class under the supervision of a female teaching staff. The course brings together trade based skill acquisition with job readiness skills to adequately prepare this group of young woman to make a qualified decision when selecting senior subjects.
Outcome:
Females will be more informed and confident in their own abilities to take up a trade in their senior years. The course will strive to build their hand and power tool skills, accuracy, teamwork, and communication. Throughout the course we will also have guest speakers in to promote¬ women in trades and career options into the future.
