in AUTOMOTIVE VOCATIONAL PREPARATION
Description of Course:
This course was designed for VET in Schools to introduce skills and knowledge to perform minor maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical components and systems on vehicles. It is a hands on course and great preparation for an apprenticeship. With our comprehensive partnerships with the industry sector our students will benefit from the TEC program which is designed to upskill students with soft skills to prepare them for industry.
What are Soft Skills?
Soft skills can be defined as a set of non-technical, professional abilities such as communication, interpersonal and customer service skills, as well as personal traits such as integrity and responsibility that employees need to secure employment and succeed in the workplace. International Youth Foundation’s “Passport to Success” program is a 30 unit qualification which will provide students the Life Skills that are a critical missing link for employers and young job seekers.
What is TEC?
Employers around the world are experiencing critical shortages of skilled workers. At the same time, education programs on their own often fail to teach the students skills needed by employers. TEC (Technical Education for Communities) Industry Partnership at ONTTC has been formed to address some of these issues and aims to increase student access to good jobs within the Automotive and Engineering sectors.
Activities / Tasks:
Your automotive course will include an introduction to the industry and workplace safety. You will learn from industry professionals how to:
• Use workplace tools and equipment
• Servicing and inspection of engines, transmissions, cooling, fuel and steering systems
• Identifying automotive faults
• Customer relation skills
Assessment:
Assessment is conducted using a combination of project based practical tasks, theory and tests. The assessment of your overall competence at this certificate level will be undertaken by a qualified assessor and your competence judged using all of these tasks. Students will be given a fair and adequate assessment process that include the option of an assessment re-sit.
Pathways:
It is anticipated that students completing the Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation will be in a position to gain an apprenticeship with an employer in the automotive industry. Other pathways available to students include:
• Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical technology
• Diesel Mechanic
